Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route - this is everything you need to know before going

If you’ve seen giant snow walls in Japan on social media, it was probably Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. This is one of Japan’s most famous mountain sightseeing routes, they are known for those massive snow corridors, the beautiful ropeways and cable cars views, and the impressive alpine scenery.

But after actually visiting ourselves… we realized it’s MUCH more confusing to plan than it looks online 😂
So I'm going to share the complete practical guide based on our real family experience. Hope this helps if you're planning to visit soon.

What is the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route?

The Alpine Route is a sightseeing route crossing the Northern Japan Alps between Toyama and Nagano Prefecture.

Instead of driving yourself through the mountains, you use multiple transportation including cable cars, ropeways, highland buses, electric buses. This is one of the best way to experience all it's beauty. The journey itself going up is also one of the highlight for us.

Which Side Should You Start From?

There are two entrances:

🚩Toyama Side
Starting point :Tateyama Station

🚩Nagano Side
Starting point : Ogizawa Station

We started from the Toyama side because our route was:
Osaka → Fukui → Kanazawa → Toyama → Alpine Route → Takayama

If your itinerary includes Kanazawa, Toyama and Takayama then go with the Toyama side, it's more convenient.

How to Book Your Ticket? (VERY Important)

Honestly this is one of the most confusing part 😂 But think of it like a “chain journey”. From cable car - bus - ropeway etc.
You’re not taking just one train, but crossing mountains in stages. So the ticket system is designed for different travel styles.

You can book at the counter or online.
We booked online in advance by the way. But they have different ticket system depending on how you want to travel.
It's not as straightforward as the others, but I guess it's also good for people with different plans. But understand it beforehand makes this process so much easier.

1. One-way tickets
👉Travel from one side of the Alpine Route to the other without returning to the starting point (Tateyama ↔ Nagano)
👉If you want to continue to another city this is for you

2. Round-trip tickets (we booked this)
👉Go in and come back the same way (Tateyama ↔ Tateyama)
👉We want to stay in Toyama still

3. Partial-route tickets
👉Only doing some part of the route, not the full crossing.
👉This still include the Snow Wall

This was our booking : Tateyama Station ↔ Kurobeko Round Trip

💰 Price: ¥16,480 for 4 adults
Child pricing depends on age. Below 6 is usually free but share seat with adult.

We Made This Big Mistake That Almost Ruined this Whole Thing (Please read!)

When we booked, there was only the 1pm slot available. At first, we thought it was fine…but then realized there was a fixed departure timing, and it was easier than expected. Ultimately we couldn't finish the full route to Kurobe Dam and had to catch the last train down. But at least we managed to visit Murodo and Snow Wall and it was worth it. It was so surreal seeing the massive wall, we looked so small against it

Tips: Always, always book the earliest morning slot possible.

Going Up And Down With Different Kind Of Transportation

Like I mentioned earlier, what makes this special is the different transport you need to take to get to the top. Each ride offers different views and experiences. We thoroughly enjoyed all of them, although it can be tiring for kids sometimes (Eusen slept for some part of the ride).

> Cable Car (Steep mountain experience)
> Highland Bus (Passing through snowy mountain roads)
> Ropeway (Panoramic views of valleys and mountains) > Electric / Trolley Bus

Since we only had enough time to reach Murodo and the Snow Wall before turning back, we missed the Tateyama Tunnel Electric Bus and Ropeway.

Best Time To See Snow Wall?

The route is open all year round, but if your goal is to see the Snow Wall is best to visit from mid April to early June. This is when the snow is tallest, sometimes it reaches 10–20 meters high depending on the condition.

We went in May and the wall was tall and very impressive!

Best Photo Spots?

It is said to have the best panoramic mountain views, sadly we missed it

But honestly everything we see was absolutely breathtaking still.

Camera tips: Use zoom lenses (or phone zoom ~5x–7x) for dramatic mountain layers and depth. Thanks me later 😂

What to Wear?

Although it's technically entering summer in May, where you feel warm in Toyama or Osaka, Murodo is still colder.

Pack warm layers as the weather can be unpredictable with cool winds or rain sometimes.And of course wear comfortable shoe for snowy condition.

Is It Suitable for Kids and Elders?

Yes! You don’t need hiking experience to enjoy this route. As you don't need to walk alot since you have different transport to bring you from 1 point to another.

> But still take note as walking is still required, albeit short
> Waiting for the transport transfer might take some time.
> High altitude might makes you uncomfortable

How Much Time Do You Need?

If you are planning to complete the full route, full day is highly recommended. It's best not to rush so you can enjoy it at your pace.

We spent some time taking pictures at each stop, and also please take the waiting time for each transfer into consideration, especially when there's crowd.

So again, start early if you can!

Food and Toilet Break?

There's restaurant, cafe, toilet and souvenir shop at the station. But food prices are higher as expected, so prepare some light snacks or water if you prefer.

Where To Park If Self Drive?

The parking near Tateyama Station can fill quickly during peak season. So arrive early if you can. We didn't have a hard time finding a parking fortunately. But can imagine it'll be different if it's on a weekend or peak seasons.

Or you can book a private car service with a driver from Hippo Travel Japan and save this hassle.
It will certainly make this whole trip feel much easier since they also can help to plan the whole thing for you - private car with driver, planning a customized itinerary, sorting out the tickets of an attractions, booking your stay. Or they can also suggest other activities if you prefer.

Basically you just sit tight and enjoy the ride, let them plan this whole thing for you 🙂

What We Wished We Knew

> Morning entry slots are extremely important, allocate full day for this
> Travel time between sections is longer than expected
> Weather changes quickly in the mountains, bring extra layers if you're sensitive
> It is more tiring than it looks (especially with kids)

Ultimately, Is It Worth It?

Absolutely YES! Would come back second and finish the full route if we have a chance. Tateyama Alpine Route Snow Wall is famous for a reason, most snow wall in the world is not accessible and has consistent snow fall every year for it to reach this tall. The snow fall in this region is so consistent that it sometimes reaches as high as a 6 story building! That's crazy!

Walking through the snow wall is truly a unique experience, but each year the wall is melting faster causing it to become lower due to global warming. Some day it might just disappear? Checkout this place if you can while it's still here. You will not regret it.
